Feliz Ano Nuevo Happy New Year 2011

One of my first ever soap clients, a Spanish Lady, who confessed to always treating herself to a brand new soap every new years eve, ending the year with a long bath reflecting on the year gone by and using the soap to wash away old tonterias. A Spanish tradition and I suspect a Gaia tradition.
Today is of course the day to reflect ( in the bath) on the year just gone by and to be grateful for all the Universe has put our way. It is also the day to ask the Universe for everything that we wish and desire from the year about to start. TOMORROW is of course the day on which we must do a little of everything we hope to be doing for the rest of the year. In my case this will be the same as every year... drink a hot chocolate, drink some champagne... do a little business and a little pleasure... and 2011 will be just fabulous.  ( This is of course a German tradition)    http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/worlds-strangest-new-year-traditions
Our best wishes for 2011 go out to all our clients, friends and family THANK YOU ALL of you for help, support, inspiration and custom during 2010.
The Gaia Team with their spouses at the Christmas knees-Up!
See you in NEXT YEAR!

Jacksons Kitchen Soap

We have had many return customers this year that asked especially for Jacksons Kitchen Soap. My son Jackson who is a chef had the idea for me to make a soap that has lemon rind in it as this eliminates the kitchen smells like Garlic, Onion and Fish from your hands. His top tip when using the soap:' Always wash hands with cold water to avoid cooking the smells into the skin.'
Jackson has just set up his own catering business in Norfolk, Oystercatcher Catering

November Days at the GAIA finca

Been busy all weekend making products for the up coming Christmas season. Trays of chocolate lip balm http://www.gaia-natural-mallorca.com/products/chocorangelipbalm.html to be presented I think with small delicious bars of fine Belgium Chocolate were on the work room tables yesterday and today the masses of heavily scented jasmine blossoms on my plants convinced me that it must be THAT time of year for Jasmine soap. Midnight Jasmine from a Secret Garden http://www.gaia-natural-mallorca.com/products/soaps/midnightjasmine.html  . I have to make enough to last us all year as I only have such an abundance of blossoms once a year; in November..

We always say here in Mallorca that November is our secret month as nobody actually knows just how beautiful the days are. Some mornings and some evenings my valley actually fills up with cloud and the Gaia Finca sits above the clouds… the evening light is the most beautiful it ever gets all year and we all get inspired to make lots of fabulous products for Christmas.

Inspired by a journey

In September I was lucky to take trip to Istanbul, a fabulous city on the banks of the Bosporus, a vibrant city with one foot in Europe and one in Asia.

Visiting the Bazaar on the Asian side of the Bosporus I was able to shop for essential oils, look for bottles and get inspired. The 500 year old Bazaar appears unchanged, busy and bustling full of interesting people and items. After some searching I found a small shop selling essential oils and to my delight handmade soaps. The young man there told me how he had taken over the business from his father who ran it before him. Communications were a challenge but we soon managed once we realized that we were both in the same business… the business of scents and essentials oil products. He magiced a cup of coffee grinds for me so sniff after smelling different oils in order to clear my nose from the previous scent. I came away with pure Rose and Jasmine essential oils aswell as Amber thick and golden, pungent Patchouli. The idea to create a Perfume was born.

The next stop of our trip took me to Paris and there in a Chocolate shop of the kind that makes your heart beat higher I found sugared Rose and Verveine Petals. I realized that a perfume should be a complete sensuous experience. Smell and Taste. When dabbing on your perfume you could nibble a few of your crystallised sugar petals. I returned to Mallorca to harvest autumn Rose petals and Verveine leafs sprinkle them with sugar and dried them in the sun. The result is a limited number of Turkish hand blown bottles filled with a delicious perfume, each in a box with a small bag of crystallised flower petals.

While in Istanbul my husband and I visited a historic Hamam dating back to 1557, a classic Turkish Bath except that we were able to go as a couple.
Traditionally the Hamams have times for women and children and separate times for men. To lie under the ancient dome on hot marble slabs and slowly heat up, relax and cleanse your body was a most fabulous experience. You were then scrubbed down rigorously by two young men with lots of soap and hard gloves and intermittently washed down with bowls full of cold water. These bowls are beautifully styled and apart as a water thrower are used to carry about what you need in the Hamam… your own soap, exfoliating bar and loofha glove.

It looks like the kind of bathtime goodies that we produce at Gaia have been used in places like this for centuries to cleanse and delight the senses.
